Personalized genomic insights for preventive health.
At My Concierge MD, David Nazarian, MD, offers physician-guided whole genome sequencing (WGS) through blood collection and specialized outside laboratories. Genetic information can support personalized preventive medicine when interpreted alongside personal history, family history, examination and standard clinical testing.
What Is Whole Genome Sequencing?
Whole genome sequencing analyzes most of a person’s DNA, including protein-coding and noncoding regions. The test may identify clinically important inherited variants, but not every region or variant type is equally well assessed, and not every finding is interpretable or actionable. The scope and quality of reporting depend on the laboratory and test ordered.
What Can We Learn and Act on Today?
Hereditary cancer risk
Certain pathogenic variants, such as those associated with hereditary breast, ovarian or colorectal cancer syndromes, can lead to genetics referral, individualized surveillance, preventive options or testing of relatives. Findings require confirmation and guideline-based interpretation; they do not mean a patient will necessarily develop cancer.
Inherited cardiovascular conditions
Actionable findings in selected genes associated with familial hypercholesterolemia, cardiomyopathy or inherited arrhythmia syndromes may prompt specific lipid treatment, electrocardiography, echocardiography, specialist assessment or family screening when appropriate.
Medication response
Selected gene-drug interactions can influence medication choice or dosing. Pharmacogenomic results should be interpreted using established professional guidance and confirmed test coverage; sequencing is not a universal predictor of treatment response.
Rare and familial conditions
For certain medical presentations or strong family histories, genetic testing can assist diagnostic evaluation. In some situations, a focused clinical panel or specialist-directed test may be preferable to WGS.
How We Use Results at My Concierge MD
- Pretest consultation: review medical history, family history, expected benefits, limitations, privacy, cost, and choices about secondary findings.
- Blood collection and outside laboratory testing: a specimen is sent to a selected specialty laboratory, with testing scope confirmed before ordering.
- Clinical interpretation: Dr. Nazarian evaluates the reported findings and coordinates with clinical genetics or genetic counseling when indicated.
- Personalized follow-up: use medically actionable findings to guide surveillance, prevention, specialist referrals, medications, and potential family testing.
The Future of Genomic Medicine
Genome sequencing may become increasingly useful as research improves variant interpretation, polygenic risk methods, pharmacogenomics, rare-disease diagnosis and precision treatments. Gene editing and individualized genomic therapies are active research fields, with some disease-specific clinical applications already available. Most proposed longevity applications remain unproven, and sequencing does not currently predict exactly how long someone will live or which treatments will prevent aging.
Important Limitations
A negative report does not rule out hereditary disease or eliminate the need for conventional screening. Variants of uncertain significance generally should not drive irreversible clinical decisions. Findings can affect biological relatives and raise privacy and insurance questions. Clinical-grade testing, patient consent, appropriate confirmation and genetic counseling are essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is whole genome sequencing the same as a consumer DNA test?
No. Clinical WGS can examine far more sequence information, but the actual reporting and medical validity still depend on the laboratory and analysis ordered.
Will I receive a personalized prevention plan?
When a medically actionable result is identified, Dr. Nazarian can discuss relevant next steps and coordinate specialty care.
Will genomic information become more valuable over time?
Potentially. Reanalysis may yield new interpretations as knowledge evolves, although availability, recontact and storage policies depend on the testing laboratory.
